The University of Brighton has opened what it describes as the UK’s largest indoor cricket academy, with LED lighting supplied by NVC Lighting.
The academy forms part of the university’s new Brighton Sport and Health Complex and is a partnership with Square One Cricket.
It provides indoor training space for players of all ages and abilities and is also open beyond the student community.
Electrical contractor TJ Electrical delivered the lighting installation, working with supplier NVC Lighting and wholesaler Rexel.
The project required the former tennis hall to be converted into a specialist indoor cricket venue.
Meeting cricket lighting standards
TJ Electrical selected NVC Lighting’s Saturn high-bay luminaire, a rectangular fitting available with sensing and dimming functions.
The design process aimed to meet lighting requirements set out by the England and Wales Cricket Board, including intensity and uniformity.
Ian Marsh, Contracts Manager at TJ Electrical, said the installation had to comply with standards that would support national and regional cricket teams using the venue.
Paul Addison, Lighting Design Engineer at Rexel, developed the lighting layout to meet 1,500 lux levels as required for indoor cricket, which is considerably higher than the 500 lux typical in offices.
The design also targeted a uniformity of 0.9 across the court area, compared with 0.6 for commercial workspaces.
The final plan used 120 Saturn fittings. Alongside performance requirements, the luminaires were chosen for durability and efficiency, including selectable power settings and colour temperatures.
The fitting offers up to 193 lumens per circuit watt and carries a seven-year warranty, and TJ Electrical reported straightforward installation once the design phase was complete.
NVC Lighting provided technical support throughout the process and says it continues to offer design and onsite services for projects requiring tailored lighting solutions.
