Zumtobel Group and its lighting brands, Thorn and Zumtobel Lighting have helped to deliver the perfect learning environment for Riverbank Primary School in Dalmarnock, Glasgow. The lighting solution for the project uses a wide variety of luminaires that incorporate the most energy efficient and sustainable technology available.
Built to augment ongoing regeneration in the area, the new Riverbank Primary School has 14 classrooms, assembly and gym halls; drama and nurture rooms, administrative and office spaces as well as a library.
The school has been conceived as two elements namely a brick-clad classroom block and double height metal-clad multi-purpose hall with a small clock tower signifying the main entrance square at the junction of these two halves. Each wing has a different function and structural strategy.
Thorn’s OMEGA LEs are installed in the classrooms, providing glare control. The luminaire which uses 4000K LED and has 50000 hours of life, keeps maintenance costs to a minimum. IQ WAVE illuminates the offices delivering the ideal light distribution helping to support comfort and alertness.
The high cylindrical illuminance is achieved with the help of a special reflector and ensures perfect lighting for various tasks. IQ WAVE achieves a unified glare rating of <19, in line with the EN 12464 standard on workplace lighting.
Zumtobel’s CRAFT LED high bay luminaires, with an innovative lens optic ensure a highly efficient light distribution and glare control (UGR 22), in the sports halls and the dining hall. CRAFT produces a pleasant lighting atmosphere that helps enhance the safety and wellbeing of those using the space, whilst the optimised thermal management and a protection rating of IP65 ensure a long product lifetime.
A protected design that incorporates a chimney effect to create the excellent thermal management, draws away both heat and dust from the luminaire and ensures that maintenance requirements are significantly reduced. Energy consumption is also reduced thanks to a combination of LED technology and a dimmable converter as standard.
Zumtobel’s ONDARIA circular ambient luminaires illuminate the staircases and provide direct / indirect distribution. The round shape means that it can be positioned in any direction without compromising the constant quality of light. Both fittings are also supplied with integral emergency lighting.
GLACIER from Thorn, a high performance (76-107 Llm/W) decorative luminaire, illuminates the entrance area, providing excellent lighting quality in an attractive, pendant fitting. The floodlighting of the onsite MUGA Pitch presented problems because of the close proximity of nearby housing. Thorn provided the perfect solution by lighting the pitch from one side using Champion HQI high performance asymmetrical floodlights.
Champion floodlights incorporate a ‘flat glass’ concept and an integrated visor for total control of glare, maximum optical efficiency and accurate light distribution with minimum light spillage. Thorn’s OLSYS LED illuminate the onsite car park lighting and building perimeter.
Meanwhile, Thorn’s CHALICE Recessed fittings illuminate the corridors and toilets. OMEGA C LED has also been utilised in these areas for good uniformity and adjustable mounting options for through-life flexibility. KATONA also illuminates the toilets where recessed luminaires couldn’t be used. KATONA is a very slim, round, functional LED fitting which is suitable for direct mounting to walls or ceilings.
Other luminaires installed at the Riverbank Primary School include DUOPROOF LED in the kitchens, AQUAFORCE PRO in the stores and plant rooms and OLSYS LED luminaires for the exterior illumination.
Several luminaires from Thorn’s long life and low maintenance VOYAGER LED series provide the emergency lighting throughout the school. Zumtobel’s PURESIGN illuminate all of the emergency exits.
