Siemens introduces ultra-fast circuit protection technology

German multinational technology company Siemens has introduced its SENTRON Electronic Circuit Protection Device (ECPD) to the UK market, offering a new approach to protecting low-voltage electrical circuits in commercial, industrial, and critical infrastructure environments.

Launched at the company’s Transform 2026 event in Manchester, the semiconductor-based device is designed to detect and isolate electrical faults significantly faster than conventional electromechanical protection.

Siemens says it responds to current fluctuations up to 1,000 times faster than traditional circuit breakers and can reduce the energy released during a short circuit by up to 99.5%.

The SENTRON ECPD is intended for installation in electrical distribution boards and control cabinets used across applications including factories, hospitals, and data centres.

Jacob Wells, Product Manager at Siemens UK & Ireland, comments, “Electrical faults may be occasional but, in critical environments, their consequences can be significant.

“The faster you can detect and contain a fault, the less opportunity it has to damage equipment, disrupt operations, or leave engineers searching for the cause.

“As UK sites become more electrified and more connected, circuit protection needs to become smarter too. SENTRON ECPD gives installers, panel builders, and operators a future-ready way to protect circuits, monitor performance, and support uptime.”

Combining protection with remote monitoring

In addition to circuit protection, the device incorporates switching, measurement, communication, and diagnostic functions within a single unit.

It supports remote monitoring, fault diagnostics, and switching, enabling operators to identify and respond to issues without requiring an on-site visit.

Siemens says the technology has already been deployed in remote gas industry installations, where it helped identify a generator fault before it was reported manually. The company states that the deployment reduced service visits by up to 30%.

The device also forms part of the electrical system aboard Bluegame’s BGF45 yacht, where it is used to support electrical protection and energy management.

According to Siemens, integrating multiple functions into a single device can reduce the number of components required within electrical panels, potentially cutting cabinet space by up to 80%, depending on the application.
