The Electrical Industries Charity (EIC) is using Suicide Prevention Month to encourage conversations around mental health and remind those working across the electrical and energy industries that support is available.
Despite growing awareness around mental wellbeing, suicide remains a serious concern within construction and related industries. EIC says too many people continue to suffer in silence rather than speaking openly about the challenges they face.
Figures highlighted by the Charity underline the scale of the issue. In 2020, construction workers were among those at the highest risk of suicide in the country, at 3.7 times the national average. Suicide is also the leading cause of death for men under 50 in the UK, while men are three times more likely to die by suicide in England than women.
Research also indicates significant barriers to seeking support. Only 36% of referrals to NHS talking therapies are for men, while 40% of men have never spoken to anyone about their mental health.
EIC says workplaces have an important role to play in suicide prevention, providing community, routine and opportunities for colleagues and managers to recognise when someone may need support.
The Charity is encouraging employers to establish clear mental health policies that include suicide prevention measures, as well as providing appropriate mental health training for employees, managers and HR teams. Businesses should also ensure staff have easy access to resources such as Employee Assistance Programmes, counselling services and crisis helplines.
Creating a supportive workplace culture is equally important, says EIC, with regular conversations around mental health helping to reduce the stigma associated with seeking support. Employers should also have clear confidentiality and crisis management procedures in place so disclosures can be handled compassionately and individuals quickly connected with professional help.
EIC says Suicide Prevention Month provides an opportunity for everyone in the electrical industry to consider the part they can play, whether checking in with a colleague, starting a conversation or encouraging someone to seek professional support.
