EDF launches HPIN Direct to boost heat pump installations

EDF Heat Pumps, a UK installer of air source heat pumps owned by EDF Energy, has launched HPIN Direct, a new umbrella scheme designed to widen access to heat pump installation for smaller firms and independent installers. The scheme went live on 4 September 2025.

Developed in partnership with manufacturer Daikin UK, HPIN Direct aims to reduce barriers to entry for small businesses, particularly those unable to access government funding due to the cost and complexity of gaining MCS certification.

Addressing the installer shortage

The UK Government has set a target of 600,000 heat pump installations a year by 2028. However, a shortage of qualified installers has led to doubts over whether that goal can be met.

One of the main obstacles is that many smaller businesses cannot access the Boiler Upgrade Scheme as it requires MCS certification. This certification is both time consuming and costly, making it less feasible for smaller firms.

Clayton Browne, Managing Director at EDF Heat Pumps, says, “We often hear there are not enough installers for the demand in heat pumps.

“With HPIN Direct, we are changing this – opening the door so that we can get thousands more installers trained and installing heat pumps. It’s an exciting opportunity for the industry.”

Scheme structure

Through HPIN Direct, EDF Heat Pumps will manage the design, commissioning, and MCS certification of projects, as well as Boiler Upgrade Scheme funding applications.

Installers will therefore be able to fit heat pumps in their local areas without needing MCS certification themselves.

The scheme also offers training for installers and provides bundled pricing options, covering the heat pump, cylinder, and controls.

EDF says the arrangement will reduce paperwork and administrative costs, while giving installers greater flexibility in pricing and job management.

Iain Bevan, Residential New Business Director at Daikin UK, comments, “The demand for heat pump installers is growing ever more urgent, with the current shortage holding back adoption in the UK.

“HPIN Direct will help build a network of local installers who can support their communities and increase the number of heat pumps installed in UK homes.”
